Geocaching is a technical scavenger hunt and is a growing sport worldwide. People hide containers called caches of varying sizes and use GPS coordinates to locate the cache then sign a log located in the cache. The larger ones hold prizes (“swag”) that could be anything from toys to trackable pieces that are followed by their owner via the assigned number and travel all over the world. You can refer to the website, www.geocaching.com, for more information.
The eclipse cointrail will launch on Saturday, August 19th with an event to be held at the Convention Center. We will have “passports” available with the caches listed and a newbie geocacher table to explain the basics. Once you have found each geocache and stamped your “passport” you will receive a trackable geocoin customized for the Columbia eclipse experience. We will have coins available to the first 300 cachers (1 per family.)
This event will be handing out free eclipse glasses to guests courtesy of the City of Columbia, S.C.! Available on event date and time only.
Located at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia, S.C.
