Ten outdoor Eclipse Stations will be set up across the USC campus on 8/21 and staffed by USC Eclipse Ambassadors from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Learn about the eclipse, see the sun through a solar telescope, play some games, and get tips for safe viewing and how to get the most out of the eclipse.
Station 8: Solar System Shuttle Run
In this activity, the sun will be set to approximately the size of a quarter, so that the orbits of the 8 major planets can fit within the length of a football field. Visitors will be able to build a model using pre-measured rope for each planet, which is attached to a stake with a flag at the end. The shuttle run will consist of participants planting each stake in one by one, and returning to the “sun post” after each one to get the next planet. Time stops after you’ve planted Neptune and returned to the sun post.
This event will be handing out free eclipse glasses to guests courtesy of the City of Columbia, S.C.! Available on event date and time only.
Located at the recreation fields by Blatt P.E. Center in Columbia, S.C., hosted by USC Dept. of Physics and Astronomy.
